Roof Progress

When we last left off, about mid-day on Friday, August 24, the lower slope of the south side was about half  done.

And if you're a Facebook Friend, then you saw where they were at the end of the day on Friday - about 2/3 done.

I made a quick trip out here Wednesday evening for something else, and saw that they had completed the lower slope on the south side, but didn't have my camera with me and my phone was too close to being out of juice to allow for photos, so just picture those lovely new shingles extending all the way over to the right side of the roof.

When I arrived this morning, the work had progressed to the upper slope of the south side, and while it is difficult to see well in the photograph, they've covered from the right end to the first set of chimneys, which is pretty close to half.

The crew is off today for the holiday weekend, so work will not resume until next Tuesday, but at the rate they're going, they should be on to the north side the next time we check in.

  1. How long did it take to cover the half side of the roof? Did it take weeks to finish? Anyway, it doesn't matter how long or how quick they build that roof, it's a matter of how they make it sturdier to withstand strong and damaging winds. Well, update us if ever there is progress on your roof, alright?

    1. Thanks for reading. It took them about a week to do the lower slope of the one side.

  2. I can only agree with Chantay. The more important thing is how it’s done and not how long it took to finish. After all, you don’t rush something you intend to last for a long time. I think with the new shingles, the roof appeals more to the eye. Unlike before that the roof looks like it was an extension of the wall. ;) By the way, are those insulating shingles?

    1. The color is much brighter, but my understanding of cedar is that it will weather and darking fairly quickly. The shingles are overlapped so that alone should provide extra insulation. It was seeming cooler on the 3rd floor to me earlier this month - usually we can feel it getting hotter as we progress the stairs, but the third floor was seeming about the same temperature as the second in the last few weeks of summer.

  3. I agree with Noreen, the color of your new roof is more pleasing to the eyes. Choosing a light color for your roof can create a vibrant and welcoming ambiance. I’m pretty sure that every passerby will be fascinated with your new roof. The overall setting of your home is so classical and relaxing. It seems that you were able to get a team of competent carpenters, so good job!

  4. Oh my! It looks like a cute, miniature house because of the overall combination of your housing materials! Excellent job! And congratulations for finally finishing it! Just a reminder, always keep your roof shingles clean as much as possible to prevent it from easily wearing out.

  5. It looks so good! You really are preserving the classic, Victorian appeal of the mansion, aren’t you? =) The roof complements significantly with the walls. Good choice, good job! More power to the Graeme Park! =)

    1. Thanks. Not even close to Victorian-era though (about 150 years older). Georgian interior, vernacular exterior.
