The Role of Quaker Women in Colonial America

From the beginning the Quakers treated women more equally and gave them more power and the ability to hold leadership positions within their faith than any of the other early Christian religions. They were allowed to speak in meeting, publish, and encouraged to get an education. While Quaker women enjoyed greater equality within the church and community, their influence did not extend to financial matters, and men kept the upper hand by taking care of property, finances, and business.

Learn more about the role of early Quaker women from speaker Sarah DiSantis, director of the Morgan Log House, at our spring Lunch & Learn Lecture at Graeme park.

A continental breakfast will be served before the talk and a hot and cold lunch buffet will follow. Tours of the historic Keith House will also be available. The cost is $20/person and preregistration is requested.

Lunch will include:
l Hot entrée
l Deli tray with rolls and sandwich “fixins”
l Vegetarian option
l Salad, dessert, beverages

A Wedding at Graeme Park: Noelle & Andrew

We're catching up here after a computer crash and several weeks without internet access with the wedding of Nicolle and Andrew, which took place back in June.

The couple chose the front of the Keith House at Graeme Park as the site of their ceremony - doesn't the blue trim look great with the bridesmaids' dresses and the guys' ties?

After the "I do's" were said, the guests enjoyed a cocktail hour in front of the 1840s Pennsylvania bank barn with catering by The Red Cedar Grille, in Colmar. The fare included bruschetta, salsa and chips, cheese and crackers, and fruit and veggie platters.

Back in the Open Aire Affairs tent, the tables were set in pale gray linens with blue accents and blue, white, and gray lanterns adorned the ceiling. Centerpieces were simple jars dressed with burlap and lace and sweet bouquets of baby's breath.

The buffet dinner included pulled pork, friend chicken, collard greens, mashed potatoes, spring mix salad, and rolls.

The stunning 5-tier wedding cake was traditional and modern at the same time with strawberry and lemon layers.

Special Places: 1989 Photo Shoot at Graeme Park

During a recent cleaning and reorganizing of our library bookshelves, I came across an interesting little booklet called "Special Places." Flipping through pictures of old properties I suddenly stopped on a familiar image: "That's Graeme Park. But that's not our furniture! What the heck is this?" Looking more closely at the captions, I realized it was a catalog for Martex bedding. They had used Graeme Park, and several other historic properties, as settings for their product lines. None of the locations are identified, although Fonthill in Doylestown is rather distinctive and recognizable if you've been there and I believe the first set of pictures is at Ephrata Cloister (also a PHMC property). If anyone can identify the other locales, we'd love to hear from you.
